Although Georgioupolis with its lovely sandy beaches is now a thriving seaside resort it still retains a pleasing rural ambience and leisurely pace of life. Numerous tavernas and cafes surround the bustling village square whilst in little side streets you will find a number of small shops selling jewellery and local pottery. Down by the river the fishermen with their boats and nets add a tangy whiff of the sea to the village atmosphere and here it is possible to hire a boat and paddle upstream towards Lake Kournas spotting turtles and fish as they drift by. Taking the old road out of Georgioupolis it is just 6 kms to the village of Vrisses, a main stopping point for buses to the south coast harbour town of Chora Sfakion, where ferries ply between Loutro, and far flung Paleohora as well as Agia Roumeli at the foot of the Samaria gorge.

Georgioupolis (Perastikos) beach is a Blue Flag Beach

In Vrisses, huge Plane trees line the road where you will find mini-markets, a bank and a bakery (do try the cheese pies). Of a morning time this is a bustling little town, but by mid-day the pace slows and the tavernas spread their tables out towards the banks of the river Voutakis, where you can relax in the shade and enjoy a bowl of creamy local yogurt and honey, for which this area is famous.

Kalyves Beach

Sandy beach, bit coarse but good when wind is up. Beachside tavernas/cafes right on beach.

Almyrida Beach

Small narrow sandy beach, fairly shallow, nice for kids.

Arismari Taverna, Gavalochori

Amazing little taverna tucked off the main road, where the sq of the village used to be. Limited menu, but all just incredibly good, moussaka is fantastic! Tranquil atmosphere with tables on ledges underneath the large plane tree with old buildings surrounding with whitewashed walls. They a limited number of fresh dishes & grilled meat.

Gavalianis Kafenes, Gavalochori

Monica’s delightful little place in the center of Gavalochori offers Cretan dishes & often has live English bands playing in the summer. Hidden garden at the back, very friendly atmosphere.
