Skala, Kefalonia

Skala , Blue Flag Beach

An exceedingly pleasant and laid back family resort with an excellent choice of tavernas and bars, the village of Skala  in the south east of the island.  On the outskirts of the village itself a grove of shady pine trees spreads down towards the beach from the village, and the heady scent of resin is almost intoxicating.

The sandy beach runs 4 kms around the bay so, if you prefer not to use the sunbeds and parasols for hire on the main beach, then you can always find your own space further along the sandy shoreline. For a little more privacy, pretty little pebbly beaches can be found along the coast road running north towards Poros 12 kms away. Here you’ll find a pretty harbour in a sheltered bay where pine forested hillsides rise dramatically out of the sea. In the other direction, sandy Kaminia beach, 3 kms to the west of the village, is one of the nesting grounds for loggerhead turtles.

A couple of kilometres inland the old town of Skala up in the forested slopes behind the resort makes an interesting excursion by foot or car and of historical interest are the remains of a Roman Villa with beautifully preserved mosaics, for which there are signs throughout the town to point you in the right direction.

You can also take one of the trips on a glass bottom boat that makes regular trips along the coast and over to the mythical island of Ithaca.

Kalyves Beach

Sandy beach, bit coarse but good when wind is up. Beachside tavernas/cafes right on beach.

Almyrida Beach

Small narrow sandy beach, fairly shallow, nice for kids.

Arismari Taverna, Gavalochori

Amazing little taverna tucked off the main road, where the sq of the village used to be. Limited menu, but all just incredibly good, moussaka is fantastic! Tranquil atmosphere with tables on ledges underneath the large plane tree with old buildings surrounding with whitewashed walls. They a limited number of fresh dishes & grilled meat.

Gavalianis Kafenes, Gavalochori

Monica’s delightful little place in the center of Gavalochori offers Cretan dishes & often has live English bands playing in the summer. Hidden garden at the back, very friendly atmosphere.
