Lourdas, St Thomas and Trapezaki
It’s easy to see why Lourdas (or Lordata), squeezed in between the pine trees on the foothills of Mount Aenos and the beautiful sandy beach edging the coast line, has grown of recent years into a select holiday resort. A handful of tavernas offer traditional Greek hospitality and with a few minimarkets and small tourist shops, the scene is set for a relaxed holiday.
The beach below the village, backed by allotments growing a profusion of fruits and vegetables, is long with shallow shelving sand making it ideal for families with small children. Conveniently on the beach a few tavernas serve snacks and drinks throughout the day and make a romantic venue for evening meals with locally caught fish on the menu, served with vegetables from their own allotments.
Along the coast either side of Lourdas itself are several smaller bays and coves, some quite undeveloped with no facilities and ideal for getting away from it all.
A little east of Lourdas Beach, at Trapezaki, you’ll find a picture book shell shaped beach of gently shelving sand, perfect for families with young children. There’s a pretty harbour for small boats to tie up. Dennis’ Taverna serves food all day, with an evening ‘gourmet’ recipe, more than a cut above that which you would normally expect at a beach side taverna.
Keep going east and St Thomas beach sits below a beach bar serving cooling drinks and some traditional food and a taverna. This is a small beach so in summer you need to get here early for space on the sand (no sun beds) but there is also a rocky platform with a ladder for swimming. A footpath leads around a headland to another stretch of mixed sand and rock.
